Research — what happens between people and AI
I study what actually happens between people and AI. One page per topic on what it is and why I look at it. What comes out of the research does not stop at a paper — it becomes an app.
Human–AI Interaction (HAI)
When a person uses an AI, what happens beyond the screen?
Human–AI Interaction (HAI) is the subfield of HCI that studies what passes between a person and an AI system. It goes past whether a button is easy to press, and asks what a person expects of an AI, how they explain it to themselves when that expectation is broken, and how they change their own behaviour in response.
ReadHuman-Centered AI (HCAI)
What exactly does it mean to build AI around people?
Human-Centered AI (HCAI) is the commitment to design AI so that it enlarges human judgement and control rather than replacing it. It refuses the trade-off between automation and human control and aims to raise both, and it asks at design time who pays when the system is wrong.

How do you find out what a person actually goes through with an AI?
You cannot learn what a person goes through by asking alone. The method is to put what they said (interviews), what they did (behavioural logs) and what they are doing (field observation) side by side, and look for where the three disagree.
ReadResponsible AI
When an AI gets it wrong, where does the consequence land?
Responsible AI judges a system by what happens when it is wrong rather than by how well it scores. An error rate in an evaluation and the loss borne by the person on the receiving end are not the same size, and the question is who absorbs the difference.
ReadAccessibility & Aging
Who does a well-built technology leave out?
Accessibility is not a separate feature for disabled people; it exposes what body, what senses and what speed a system quietly assumes. Aging is the reminder that everyone eventually falls outside those assumptions.
ReadSocial Computing
Why do systems full of people never behave as designed?
Social computing deals with systems whose content is other people. Such a system is not the sum of its features: people watch and react to each other, norms and dynamics form that no designer intended, and those are what the experience actually consists of.
ReadResponse latency and AI silence
When an AI does not answer straight away, what does a person fill the gap with?
Response latency is a performance number measured in seconds, but to the person waiting it is an event that has to be interpreted. Silence is not empty — a person fills it with a reason, and that reason changes what they trust and do next.
